What is a dribble bib?
A dribble bib is a small cloth or fabric accessory designed to be worn around a baby's or toddler's neck to catch drool, saliva, or food that might otherwise get on their clothes. They're particularly useful during:
- Teething periods when babies drool more than usual
- Feeding times to catch food spills
- For babies with reflux who frequently spit up
Dribble bibs are typically more stylish and smaller than regular feeding bibs. They often have absorbent materials like cotton or fleece on the front and sometimes a waterproof backing. Ours can be found here https://littlescandibaby.com/collections/dribble-bib
They come in various designs, patterns, and materials, and have become quite fashionable baby accessories while serving the practical purpose of keeping clothes dry and reducing the need for frequent outfit changes.
What is the difference between a feeding bib and a drool bib?
Drool/Dribble Bibs:
- Designed primarily for absorbing saliva/drool (particularly during teething)
- Smaller, more lightweight, often with a stylish/fashionable appearance
- Made from highly absorbent materials and worn throughout the day
Feeding Bibs:
- Designed specifically for catching food during mealtimes
- Larger with more coverage and often includes a food-catching pocket/trough
- Made from easily cleanable materials (silicone, plastic, wipeable fabrics)
Are drool bibs worth it?
Drool bibs are definitely worth it for many parents, particularly during certain stages of your baby's development. Here's why:
During teething (which can last many months), babies often produce excessive drool that can soak through multiple outfits daily. Drool bibs catch this moisture, keeping clothes dry and reducing laundry significantly.
They're also a practical solution for babies with reflux issues who frequently spit up small amounts. Rather than changing their entire outfit multiple times a day, you simply swap out the dribble bib.
What is the best material for dribble bibs?
The best materials for dribble bibs balance absorbency, comfort, and practicality:
Cotton : Soft against baby's sensitive skin, naturally absorbent, breathable, and easy to wash. Great as the front-facing layer.
Fleece: Warm and absorbent while keeping moisture away from skin, making it ideal for winter months.
The most effective dribble bibs often feature multiple layers:
- A soft, absorbent front layer (cotton, bamboo, or terry cloth)
- A middle absorbent core for heavy droolers

What age should a baby wear a bib?
Babies typically start wearing bibs around 3-4 months of age, but the timing can vary based on your baby's development and needs:
For drool bibs: These are usually introduced around 3-4 months when teething often begins and drooling increases. Many babies continue needing drool bibs until 18-24 months, or until teething is complete.
For feeding bibs: These become useful when you start solid foods, typically around 6 months. Feeding bibs remain necessary through the toddler years (2-3 years old) as children develop self-feeding skills.
Some parents use lightweight cloth bibs even with newborns if their baby has reflux or spits up frequently. In these cases, bibs can be used from birth.
The right time to stop using bibs depends on your child's development – particularly when they can eat without significant mess and when teething and excessive drooling have subsided, usually between 2-3 years of age.
What kind of bibs are best for newborns?
For newborns, the best bibs are:
- Soft cloth bibs with gentle closures - Look for lightweight, absorbent cotton or bamboo fabric that won't irritate a newborn's sensitive skin. Avoid stiff materials or scratchy tags. Velcro closures can be harsh, so snap closures or tie closures are often better for delicate newborn skin.
- Small, properly sized bibs - Newborn-specific bibs are proportioned for tiny babies. Larger bibs can bunch up around the face and become uncomfortable or even pose a safety risk.
- Simple, functional designs - For the newborn stage, you don't need food-catching pockets or waterproof backings. Basic cloth bibs work well for catching spit-up and drool. Some parents prefer front-fastening bibs that don't require lifting the baby's head.

Can a newborn sleep with a bib?
A strong No, newborns should never sleep with a bib. This is an important safety guideline that pediatricians and safe sleep experts strongly recommend.
Bibs pose several serious risks during sleep:
- Strangulation hazard if the bib strings, snaps, or fabric gets wrapped around the baby's neck
- Suffocation risk if the bib rides up and covers the baby's face
- Choking danger if parts of the bib (like snap closures) detach
Is it okay for a baby to sleep with muslin?
Safe Use of Muslin for Babies
Advantages:
- Breathability: Muslin is lightweight and allows airflow, reducing overheating.
- Softness: Gentle on delicate skin.
Safety Considerations:
-
Blanket Use:
- Avoid for under 12 months: No loose blankets in the crib to prevent suffocation.
- Can be used as a light cover, ensuring it won't cover the face.
-
Safe Sleeping Practices:
- Always place the baby on their back in a clean crib.
- Make sure if the muslin blanket when used in the crib or pram, that it is tucked in both sides and bottom very tightly and not covering the arms so that there wont be any danger should the baby cover their face with the blanket. Keep an eye on your baby as it is always wise to do so
